To Ride is to Breathe

The sunshine, beauty, adventure, freedom…these are a few of the things my best friend told me were grand about riding horses. I have yet to try it out but it got me thinking and wondering how many people out there have had the pleasure of riding a horse? How many people have not attempted because they didn’t know it was a possibility, or where to go, or how could there possibly be accommodations to meet whatever specifications they might face?

Equine Therapy has been recognized for its proven benefits since 1969 but people have been bonding with horses for centuries. These sensitive, graceful, powerful creatures have a lot to offer. There are lessons to be learned and healing to be had whether you get in the saddle, lead by the bridle, or just spend time around and taking care of them. People facing anxiety, traumatic brain injury, bipolar, ADD/ADHD, Asperger’s, depression, PTSD, Cerebral Palsy, Autism, various physical disabilities, or other mental health concerns have all benefited from therapeutic time with horses. Often considered majestic creatures, horses are known for having a very intuitive sense of reading people’s emotions. They are sometimes referred to as live mirrors, reflecting those working with them, and this along with relational bonds over time is why they can have such an impact on emotional health.

I don’t know anything about getting a leg up in the stirrup but I do know the statistics and testimonies are staggering. Will you try something new this season for you, or someone you support? Maybe you already have your favorite barn, try inviting others or sharing your story.
