Have Your Eyes Had It?

Our world has greatly changed. More and more people are spending a large amount of their workdays in front of computers. I don’t know about you, but my eyes are definitely feeling the strain. So, as I normally do, I research how to combat these troubled eyes. While researching I came a cross a post on WebMD and shared it with our team. As many of you are spending a vast amount of time on your computers, I thought these tips may help you too!

  • Make sure your computer is at least an arm’s length away from your face. The center of your screen should also be 10-15 degrees below eye level.
  • Cut the glare by using a matte filter.
  • Follow the 20-20-20 rule. For every 20 minutes of screen time look 20 feet away for 20 seconds.
  • Take a longer break of about 15 minutes after 2 hours of screen time.
  • If your eyes feel dry, try using artificial tears.
  • Try placing a humidifier in the room.
  • Your room should be brighter than your device.
  • If you wear contacts give your eyes a break and switch to your glasses.
  • Get regular eye exams.

Another option is to actually adjust your devices. Many of these things I never knew.

  • Raise your screen contrast.
  • Make text larger.
  • Change the darkness of your screen. It shouldn’t be lighter or darker than your surroundings.
  • Lower the color temperature on your computer. Blue light has been linked to eye strain.
  • Raise your devices refresh rate. This will reduce the flickering of the screen.

In this odd world that we are currently living in it is vital that we also remember to take care of ourselves. If you notice eye strain or fatigue hopefully these simple tips can help you to reduce the effects. From all of us here at the HCQU, stay well and stay safe!
