STATION MD

At the latest Pennsylvania Developmental Disabilities Nurses Network (PADDN) virtual conference Dr. Maulik Trivedi of StationMD was a guest speaker. He presented information on a growing trend in healthcare, telemedicine.  This company is geared specifically toward individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in group residences. StationMD is staffed by board certified medical professionals who have experience in taking care of individuals with IDD. They’ve also received specialized training in caring for vulnerable populations such as those in the IDD community and elderly.

These physicians can perform a telemedicine exam when a medical issue arises such as fever, cough, moderate pain, or minor behavioral issues. They can also help manage non-urgent issues such as prescription refills and routine check-ins.

StationMD has specific diagnostic tools available. Their physicians are able to develop and implement a treatment plan working with the person and their support team. Besides sending out prescriptions, they will schedule a follow up with the person and their team later in the day.

Through this service StationMD states that they have been able to reduce the number of trips to the emergency room and hospital admissions. This can also help minimize fear and anxiety that many people experience with visiting the ER. Additionally, they say that it has also helped to reduce healthcare costs.

StationMD also offers Behavioral Health Services through their telehealth program with both psychiatrists and psychologists who also have special training and experience working with individuals with IDD.

Family members can be included by video into the virtual examination, allowing them to actively participate in their loved one’s care. If it is determined that the individual should be transferred to the hospital, the StationMD physician can coordinate with the hospital staff to make the transfer as smooth as possible.   After the virtual appointment, documentation of the visit is sent to the person’s primary physician.  All of this is done following HIPAA guidelines using secure, compliant technology and processes.

This process allows the individual to remain in their home without having to travel. This has been a useful tool especially through the pandemic when services were limited and there was fear of exposure to the coronavirus, which can have a devastating impact on someone with IDD and underlying conditions. While telemedicine certainly has gained momentum during the COVID-19 pandemic, the convenience and popularity of this service can lead us to believe that it will continue to be around as an option.
