FACT: People with Intellectual Disabilities & Autism Can Be Outstanding Employees

In a world where there’s a Help Wanted sign in the window of every other business, it should be easy for a job seeker with an intellectual disability (ID) or Autism to find work. But business owners and hiring managers are often reluctant to even grant an interview.

At Milestone HCQU West, we wanted to lend our support to all those who do everything they can to help people with ID and Autism find employment and to ensure their success in the workplace. So, we’ve developed a three-part video series for potential employers. Each video is less than 5 minutes long and addresses some facts and common misconceptions.

The first video in our series, “The Benefits of Hiring Someone with Intellectual Disabilities or Autism” was released last month to rave reviews! One viewer stated, “I love this! It’s short and sweet, but powerful. It says everything I’ve been saying this whole time! I’m excited to share it with businesses in town! Thank you!”

Addressing common misconceptions

Today, we’re excited to share the second video in our series, “Supporting Success”. Potential employers often have misconceptions about people with ID, Autism, or disabilities, in general. Some may think it will be too much work to hire someone with special needs. The reality is, with some simple accommodations, someone with ID or Autism can be a dedicated, hard-working employee and an asset to their business.

Start the conversation

Use these videos to help address concerns and start the conversation. Share them via email or social media. View them online or download to a computer or mobile device. We also included a printable brochure that highlights the talking points that you can leave with potential employers.

Additionally, we can provide training for employers and potential employers about working with a person with ID or Autism. If you know a business owner or hiring manager who could benefit from such a training, contact Milestone HCQU West at 724-283-0990, or email HCQUinfo@MilestonePA.org.

Supporting Success

Watch for the third and final video in our series next month! It will feature some exceptional employees with ID or Autism who graciously share what it means to them to have a job. Want to be notified when it’s released? Join our mailing list for this and other news from Milestone HCQU West!
