At the HCQU we have some exciting news! You may be aware of the fact that we have an iPad lending program, where a request to borrow an iPad can be made through supports coordination for self-advocates. This FREE service is available to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities who reside in Armstrong, Beaver, Butler, Clarion, Crawford, Indiana, Lawrence, Mercer, and Venango counties. The purpose of the lending program is to allow users and support persons to familiarize themselves with a number of apps for communication that are preloaded onto the iPad. These apps have unlocked a world of both inclusion and independence and are designed to aid with communication and daily living skills.

The iPad is available for lending for 30 days. Depending on if a waiting list is in place, a 30 day extension is available upon request, should the users and support persons decide more time is needed to “test drive these apps.” Some users may already have experience or be familiar with how to utilize these programs for communication. However, many times it can be challenging and confusing to know where to start implementing assistive technology, so that it is beneficial for the self-advocate.
