It’s a Bird! It’s a Plane! It’s a Superhero Expert!
What do you get when you cross books, superheroes, and advocacy? The perfect combination, just like bravery, strength, and determination make a great superhero. Being a millennial, I of course grew up with Spidey, Super Friends, Batman, X-Men, and all the rest to appreciate a good superhero. But did you know that there is a superhero expert living in our own state?! I had no idea about these brothers and their story that has gone viral until recently and I’m impressed and eager to share with you.
Josh Stehle, of Chester County PA, is a young author and advocate making waves of positive change across our communities. His new book, I Am A Superhero Expert tells the story of his experiences growing up with Zach, an older brother and best friend who is autistic. It promises to be a humorous, heartfelt, insightful, and thought provoking look at autism. Who better than a sibling to give us this reflective story?! The target audience is teens and adults. As a Next Chapter Book Club Coordinator, I’m intrigued to learn it even has book club questions. Anyone up for a round of reading and discussion?

Besides all of the fun around supers and villains, the platform is advocating and raising awareness for people with disabilities, especially those on the autism spectrum. Our world needs this super mission to succeed. I don’t know about you, but I think this duo has all the powerful ingredients it takes to fight ignorance, promote justice, and raise inclusive responses. The thing about Superhero stories is they go much deeper than the KAPOWS, the capes, and the flashy effects. It is the heart of the hero that captures us and the resiliency of rising to fight another day that resonates with every movie goer and comic reader. I think Zach’s reflection on superheroes and application to our lives is spot on in this TikTok video.
