What’s the Connection?

Do you have any guesses what might be the number one medical diagnosis for people with intellectual disabilities in our region?  If you guessed constipation, you are correct!  The people we support are more frequently diagnosed with constipation than anything else.  Take a moment to think about how many people you work with are on ducolax, miralax, or any other medication that prevents constipation. Medications will help solve the problem, but we also need to be encouraging exercise or movement of any kind and a healthier diet.  Foods that are processed or come from a bag, can, or box have less fiber and nutrients and do less to help constipation.  Preventing constipation can prevent bowel obstructions which are one of the FATAL FIVE. Join us on October 10, 2023 as Laura Yautz, RD explains more about dietary changes that can help prevent or alleviate constipation. She will also review simple strategies for maintaining a healthy bowel. Register for this live webinar, The Diet Constipation Connection, at Milestone HCQU West Learning Center.
