Down Syndrome Awareness

October is Down Syndrome Awareness month and did you know that in our region we are lucky enough to have the Adult Down Syndrome Clinic at UPMC?  It is one of only ten centers in the United States. The clinic is run by Dr. Peter Bulova who is also the Co-Director of Magee Center for Women with Disabilities. He is also a member of the Executive Board of the Down Syndrome Medical Interest Group.

The center is located at UPMC Montefiore and offers people with Down Syndrome care from medical professionals who are very well versed in their specific medical concerns.  I had the opportunity to attend a medical appointment and I can attest that the exam and questions about the person’s symptoms were extremely thorough. They covered almost every organ and body part because having Down Syndrome can impact almost every system.

A person with Down Syndrome is more likely to have thyroid issues.  Problems with the thyroid can lead to weight gain, fatigue, skin conditions, and bowel concerns, among other diagnoses.  They are also more prone to respiratory and structural issues that can lead to infections, sleep apnea, and dysphagia.  Having medical professionals that frequently treat people with Down Syndrome and all of the other co-occurring conditions might lead to a quicker diagnosis or more complete medical care.  If someone you support with Down Syndrome seems to be struggling, or maybe you’re just not sure that all of their medical concerns have been reviewed,  consider scheduling an appoint with the Adult Down Syndrome Center.  Call (412) 692-7963.
