Employees in the Community Share Their Experience
Employment is essential for everyone. Having a job gives us financial independence, a sense of purpose, and a better quality of life. But, for many with intellectual disabilities (ID) who are able and willing to work, getting a job can be very challenging. Potential employers often have concerns about a person’s abilities or how to accommodate their needs.
To help address some of those concerns, we developed a video series for potential employers. The first video in our series, “The Benefits of Hiring Someone with Intellectual Disabilities” was released in October. As the title states, this video focuses on the benefits of hiring a person with ID, including potential financial incentives. The second video, “Supporting Success” was released last month and it addresses common misconceptions employers may have about someone with ID and shows how some simple accommodations can ensure success.
Sharing experiences
Today, we’re very excited to share the third and final video in our series for potential employers. In this video we get to meet Lauren, Melissa, and Alex – three people who are working in the community. They graciously share their experience with us, and talk about what it means to them to have a job.
Start the conversation
Use these videos to help address concerns and start the conversation. Share them via email or social media. You can view them online or download them to a computer or mobile device. We also included a printable brochure highlighting the talking points that you can leave with potential employers.
Additionally, we can provide training for employers and potential employers about working with a person with ID or Autism. If you know a business owner or hiring manager who could benefit from such a training, contact Milestone HCQU West at 724-283-0990, or email HCQUinfo@MilestonePA.org.
